Albert Stephen Henry Anderson was born on 4 December 1916 at Barrys Reef, Victoria. In July 1940, as Australia faced the escalating threat of the Second World War, Albert enlisted in the Australian Army at Caulfield, Victoria.

He served with the 2/29th Australian Infantry Battalion, attaining the rank of Lance Corporal. During the Malayan campaign in early 1942, Albert was captured by Japanese forces and spent several years as a prisoner of war. He was assigned to “F Force” and worked on the Thai Burma Railway for the best part of 1943.

Albert was liberated at the end of the war and returned to Australia, where he was formally discharged from military service on 19 November 1945.
